Useful advice when buying cast iron radiators.
Period
cast iron radiators are quality pieces of engineering that
exude style and character. Having said this, there are some
potential problems that can easily be avoided by following
a few simple steps before buying cast iron radiators...
When buying your cast iron radiators, always make sure
the company supplying them has thoroughly pressure tested
them and make sure this is a proper hydraulic pressure test
to at the very least mains water pressure 4 to 5 bar. It
could be a total waste of time and money employing a plumber
to install cast iron radiators that do not have some kind
of guarantee against leaking.
Make sure your radiators have been thoroughly flushed to
remove any kind of sediment
that may have built up over the years. This is particularly
important if you are installing a brand new boiler, as not
doing so could void the boiler manufacturer's warranty.
If the company you are buying your radiators from doesnt
have the facilities to pressure test them, make sure they
operate a policy of replacing any radiators that are found
to leak, or at the very least refund the money you've spent.
Be careful when buying a restored cast iron radiator through
the local classified ads. More often than not, this will
be an unscrupulous person trying to recoup some of the losses
they incurred when they bought the faulty cast iron radiator
they are now trying to sell you. Unless the vendor can give
you a really good reason why they are selling a restored
cast iron radiator that they say is in perfect working condition,
dont touch it with a barge pole.
